Header - Opinion
From Sally: I’m emailing you in response to the suggestion that we contact our representatives regarding our island. If we do not have the ability to vote since some of us are not residents of Florida but pay property taxes, we should be able to vote in all local elections. Many of our island part-time residence pay huge tax bills each year with no representation whatsoever. I would like to initiate a bill through our state representatives to allow property owners the ability to vote in local and state elections in states in which they own their property and pay taxes. This is taxation with no representation.
From the office of Rep. Bill Hager …

A US Citizen can only be registered to vote in one state, and can only be a legal resident of one state. In fact, there have been people prosecuted for voting in 2 different states for the same election. I would suggest that our part time residents know they can still voice their concerns, come to town hall meetings, email and call their elected officials. We don’t look up whether or not a person is registered to vote when they call us, we just ask their address to know that we represent them.
Update: If you haven’t done so, please update your voter registration or register to vote in the upcoming March 15, 2016 Municipal Elections. Learn more …
